  • Notes
    • Governor of Vermont. He graduated from Yale in 1912 and served as an Army artillery officer in France during World War I. Proctor was employed at Vermont Marble, his family's business, and became President and Chairman of the Board. He served in several local offices in the town and village of Proctor, including Village President, Chairman of the Town Republican Committee and member of the Vermont House of Representatives. He was House Speaker from 1937 to 1939, a state Senator from 1939 to 1941, and Lieutenant Governor from 1941 to 1945. Proctor was elected Governor in 1944 and served from 1945 to 1947. He ran for reelection in 1946 but lost the Republican primary to Ernest W. Gibson. Proctor then resumed his business activities and also established the Mortimer R. Proctor Trust, which supported non profit activities in arts & culture, education, and religion that benefitted the town of Proctor. He also authored "Pleasant Memories From Public Life, 1932-1952," "Vermont, The Unspoiled Land," and "The English University Novel." His father Fletcher Proctor and uncle Redfield Proctor, Jr. both served as Governor. His grandfather Redfield Proctor served as Governor, US Secretary of War and US Senator.
