- Prominent Resident of Moriah, Dead - Supervisor Charles Putnam Succumbs to Illness Stricken Thursday - Prominent in Civic and Fraternal Affairs of Town for Many Years
PORT HENRY, N.Y. - Charles M. Putnam, Supervisor for the Town of Moriah, N.Y. and prominent in fraternal and civic affairs passed away on October 19th 1930 at his home this morning after an illness of tow days.
He was stricken ill at Hoosick Falls, N.Y. on Thursday where he was attending a meeting of the Hoosick Falls Theatre Company of which he was a director. He was removed to his home here Friday.
Mr. Putnam was born on November 21st 1877 in Moriah, N.Y., he was the son of the late Charles W. and Amanda (Butler) Putnam.
On March 20th 1905 he married Flora Woodruff who with two sons; Charles and George Putnam survive, besides a cousin Mrs. Jessie M. Vanornam of Vergennes, Vt.
He had made his home here since 1912 having moved from Moriah, N.Y. where he had spent his early life. He was educated at Sherman Collegiate Institute in Moriah, N.Y.
During his residence at Moriah, N.Y., he conducted a General Store and served as Postmaster for many years. He had been engaged in business for more than thirty four years.
His latest business venture being farming having gone into this business on an extensive scale on what is known as Claymore Farms near Ticonderoga, N.Y.
He previously had been engaged in the Grain, Feed, and Lumber Business disposing of the same last year to Albert Johnson of this village.
He was widely known and had an extensive acquaintance throughout this whole region and the intelligence of his death will cause sorrow to thousands. He was never remiss in the duties of citizenship giving always his earnest support the welfare and advancement of his community and to Essex County in general. His good deeds will remain in the hearts of many for years to come.
He was a member of Morning Sun Lodge 142 F. and A. M., Cedar Point Chapter, 269 R. A. M., Lake Champlain Commander Knights Templar 74 Port Henry, Oriental Temple A. A. O. N. M. S., Troy, Washington Council 25 White Hall, Albany Soverign Consistory S. P. R. S. 32, Past Patron of Laetitia Chapter O. E. S. Port Henry, member of Iron Ore Lodge l. O. O. F. Moriah Center, Ticonderoga Lodge of Elks, Port Henry Chamber of Commerce, Port Henry Country Club, Benedit Club, Lake Champlain Fish and Game Club, Essex Benedit Club, Lake Champlain Fish and Game Club, Essex County Fish and Game League, Essex County Past Masters Masonic Association, Essex County Farm Bureau, Essex County Republican Committee, Moriah Grange, a director of the Essex County Y. M. C. A., a director of Essex County Agricultural society, a director of the Moriah Cemetery Association, a director in the Hoosick Falls and Cambridge Theatres, and trustees of the First Presbyterian church.
He was serving his fourth term as Supervisor and had been honored two terms as chairman of the Essex county board of supervisors.
Masonic services will be conducted at the grave at the Union Cemetery in Port Henry, N.Y. [1]
