    • Helen E. Wallace Wildermuth, 90, of rural Clinton, WI, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009 in UW Hospital in Madison, WI, as a result of an automobile accident. She was born October 17, 1919 on a farm in Turtle Township, Rock County, WI, the daughter of Fred and Mable Drew-Poulsen Wallace. Helen's maternal grandfather was the first white child born in Beloit and her grandfather, Caleb Blodgett was largely responsible for the settlement of Beloit. The farm she grew up on is now the Beloit Industrial Park growing condos, homes and the city water tower. Helen was a graduate of Beloit High School Class of 1937, Blackburn College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and received her Master's Degree from UW-Madison. She taught locally in Avon Center, Clinton Corners, Clinton, Wauwatosa and McHenry, IL. Helen considered herself an "educational vagabond" – she published a book about her experiences a year ago entitled, "Vagabond Teacher". Some of her adventures include, summer school in Oslo, Norway in 1948; working with friends (Quakers) in Juamantla, Mexico; hostelling in Europe touring England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France by bicycle; summer school in Edinburg, Scotland before going on to London as an exchange teacher; a meeting with Queen Elizabeth of England; Trees for Tomorrow in northern Wisconsin; summer school in Saltilla, Mexico; four years teaching in Cartagena, Columbia and while there touring South America, down the Amazon River, through Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and back to Peru; many student tours through Greece, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and all of Europe. In 1972, she married Berl Wildermuth in Belleview, FL, and became a farm wife back in Turtle Township. Berl passed away on May 14, 2009. She taught basic education classes for Blackhawk Technical School at the Janesville Rehab Center until winter travel in their RV changed her plans. In 1984 they purchased their winter home in DeFuniak Springs, FL, and traveled south until 2006 when Berl's health required them to stay in Clinton close to family. Helen is survived by her stepson and wife, Robert and Anita Wildermuth of Clinton, WI; brother, Lester David (Betty) Wallace of Fox Lake, WI; and sister, Ruth (Ernest) Doty of Otisco, IN; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of friends. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and three brothers and a sister-in-law: Fredrick Glenn and Elinor Wallace, Ralph Willard Wallace and Robert Owen Wallace. A Celebration of Helen's Life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, in the BRIAN MARK FUNERAL HOME, 1000 Inman Parkway, Beloit, with Ted Niehaus officiating. Following a light luncheon in the funeral home, inurnment will be in the Clinton Cemetery, Clinton, WI. Friends may call from 3 until 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 in the funeral home. [1]
