  • Notes
    • Much has been written of the life of the Rev. Charles Dutton Mallary. Here is a brief timeline/summary.

Charles Dutton Mallary was the son of Daniel and Martha Dutton Mallary of West Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont. His brother, Rollin C. Mallary, became a lawyer and represented the state of Vermont in the U.S. Congress for eleven years.

In 1821, C.D. Mallary graduated from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.

In 1822, Mallary came to Charleston, SC and settled at Cambridge, SC. By April of 1824, Mallary was ordained as a minister in Columbia, SC.

On July 11, 1825, C.D. Mallary married in Columbia, SC, Susan Mary Evans, daughter of John and Sarah Evans, of Georgetown, SC. They had several children: Charles E., Rollin Daniel, Susan Mary, and Ona Mallary. Mrs. Evans died of consumption on Sept. 11, 1835 and was buried at Memory Hill Cemetery in Milledgeville, GA.

Rev. Mallary pastored many churches including the First Baptist Church of Augusta from 1830-1834 and Milledgeville from 1834-1837. He served as an agent to Mercer University from 1837-1839 and in 1840 was employed as a missionary in the service of the Central Association. Other churches include: New Providence, Macon, Forysth, Jeffersonville and LaGrange.

Not only was Mallary one of the leading ministers of his day, but he was also a leading writer and author. Some of his works include: "Memoir of Mercer", "Life of Botsford" "Soul Prosperity" and many articles in the Christian Index newspaper.

On December 3, 1840, C.D. Mallary married Mrs. Mary E. T Griffin Welch in Twiggs County, GA. She was the daughter of Archibald and Charity Griffin. Mrs. Mallary died suddenly on August 28, 1862 in her 66th year. She was buried at Oakview Cemetery in Albany, GA.

On July 31, 1864, the Rev. Charles Dutton Mallary died, aged 63 years.

      A Good Man Gone.

Rev. C.D. Mallary, D.D., so long and so favorably known in this community, died at Sumpter Springs, last Sunday, about noon. His remains were brought to this city on Monday, and on Tuesday were committed to the keeping of the grave. We learn that during his protracted sickness, his mind was calm and peaceful; and that death found him quite "ready to depart and be with Christ". In the absence of the pastor of the Baptist Church, the Rev. S.G. Hillyer officiated, and preached an excellent discourse. The weather, unfortunately, was unfavorable, and but few of our citizens were able to be present at the exercises-a circumstance which very many regret, for no man could be more beloved. His death is a great loss to this community, especially so to the Baptist Church in this city, and to the denomination of the State, of which he was the pride and ornament.
