8 | Obituary Judith Dutton Blackmer Ladd died in Middlebury on Oct. 20. She was born on May 7, 1937 to Everett and Eloise McGlaflin Dutton of Bethel, VT. She graduated from Whitcomb High School in 1955, and the University of Vermont in 1959, where she earned a BS degree in Music Education. In 1960 she married Robert M. Blackmer of Stockbridge, Vermont and raised her family in South Royalton. Judith taught private piano lessons and played the organ for numerous area churches. During the 1970s she and Jim Blakeman staged annual productions of Gilbert and Sullivan musicals for the South Royalton School 5th and 6th graders. She accompanied numerous singing groups including The Vocalaires and The Thetford Chamber Singers. In 1977 she and Robert divorced. From 1980 to 2000, she worked at the VA Hospital in White River Junction. In 1990, Judith married Jonathan Ladd of Brownsville, VT. Together they enjoyed traveling to national historic sites and working extensively on family geneologies. Mr. Ladd passed away in 1994. From 1993 to 2003, Judith and her beloved corgi, Jake, lived in Post Mills, VT. Judith is predeceased by her parents and her brother John E. Dutton of Bethel, VT. She is survived by her five children: Alice Blackmer and her husband Sam Dorrance of Leesburg, VA; Ellen Blackmer McKay of Middlebury, VT; Joel Blackmer and his wife ShamaSambergerova of Avon, CO; Peter Blackmer and his husband David Steinberg of Duluth, MN; and Seth Blackmer and his wife Susan of Breckenridge, CO, as well as seven grandchildren. Judith was an avid reader of history, fiction and historical biographies, an accomplished musician, and a master knitter. She passed all of these traits on to her children and grandchildren. There will be a graveside memorial service in the spring. Her ashes will be interred in the Barnard, VT cemetery alongside her grandparents, parents, brother and second husband.
