  	"[Joseph's father] Joseph signed the Association test of 1776, and soon removed to Weare NH. Of the character of Joseph but little is known; his son Johnathan always spoke of him as a mild, kind-hearted, old gentleman. Joseph Junior, third son of Joseph of Weare, went to Waterford Vermont, and located on a farm ten miles back in the wilderness, to which he was guided only by marked trees . When he came to this section in 1786, it was nearly all wilderness. Game was plenty, consequently he became a great hunter of bears, deer, moose, and other large animals. He became one of the wealthiest and most prominent men in that vicinity, holding the offices of Selectman, Overseer of the poor, Lister, Constable, Juror, Captain of Militia, and during his active life, Justice of the Peace. His Grand List, at one time, was one of the first in the town, as he was the unencumbered owner of 700 acres of real estate; in religion he was an Universalist, which creed, at the time, was new in this section. The rite of baptism was administered to him by a Baptist minister, an unusual proceeding. He took great pleasure in studying the bible, and was always glad to entertain a Minister of any denomination, for the sake of argument; his views were entirely original with himself, and were formed by study of the Bible, as he never heard a Universalist minister when he formed his belief. He was always noted for being original in thought, firm and decided in action, his door was always open to the poor and needy.. He came to Waterford with no means except two strong arms and an axe. In politics, he was a Jeffersonian Democrat, and for all his public service he never received any pecuniary reward." Farrand, F. W. (1881). • Notes

  Joseph and Sarah's family together was ended by a string of tragedies. In September 1796 their son Carleton, almost three, died. Ithamar was born ten months later. Whether or not it was his birth that proved fatal to Sarah, she died in September 1797, leaving two-month old Ithamar with his father and three young siblings. Ithamar did not survive the year. Faced with the prospects of rearing Samuel, age 8, Sarah, age 6, and Ira, age 2, Joseph remarried almost immediately. Nine more children, including a second Carleton, followed. Joseph was born in Seabrook, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 28 April 1765. He was the son of Joseph Felch and Mary Hoyt. He married Sarah Ayers in Seabrook, N.H., in June 1787. He married Abigail Manchester in Waterford, Caledonia County, Vermont, circa 1798. Joseph died on 27 June 1846 in Waterford, at age 81. He was buried in the Passumpsic Cemetery in Waterford.
